Vegetative characteristics

Callicarpa species are woody plants that usually grow as small trees and bushes , independently upright or only rarely climbing. Above-ground parts of the plant are often hairy, whereby the trichomes can have very different structures. The branches are round or square.

The opposite or in threes in whorls on the branches arranged leaves are simple. The leaf margins are usually serrated, rarely smooth.

Generative characteristics

The lateral, zymous inflorescences can stand over an inflorescence stem, are shorter than the leaves and usually contain many flowers. The bracts are linear.

The mostly relatively small, hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and usually four, rarely five-fold with a double flower envelope (perianth). The mostly four sepals are short tubular or bell-shaped fused. Most of the four calyx teeth are tiny. The calyx remains on the fruit, but does not enlarge. The white, blue, violet, mauve or purple-colored petals are fused into a radially symmetrical, relatively short, tubular to funnel-shaped or plate-shaped crown, which usually ends in four, rarely five corolla lobes. There are only four (rarely five to seven) stamens present, which are arranged epipetally and usually protrude slightly above the crown. The thin stamens are inserted in the corolla tube. Their anthers are elongated or elliptical, fixed on the back and consist of two parallel counters that open through longitudinal slits or pores at the tips. Four or five rare carpels are incomplete at a two-chambered, Upper permanent ovary grown. Each ovary chamber contains two ovules . The stylus is usually longer than the stamens. The scar is shield- or head-shaped and sometimes lobed.

The relatively small, more or less spherical, multi-seeded stone fruit has 4–5 seeds. Each seed is surrounded by a rock-hard endocarp (pyrene). These separated pyrenees are embedded in the fleshy mesocarp . The finish is the thin, membranous exocarp . The relatively small, elongated seed does not contain an endosperm and has a membranous seed coat . The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are fleshy.

Systematics and distribution

The listing of the genus in the first edition of the work Species Plantarum by Carl von Linné published in 1753 on page 111 is considered to be the first publication of the genus name Callicarpa . Type species is Callicarpa americana L. Synonyms for Callicarpa L. are: Aganon Raf. , Amictonis Raf. , Burchardia Duhamel , Geunsia flower , Illa Adans. , Johnsonia Mill. Nom. rej., Porphyra Lour. , Sphondylococcum Shiver , Spondylococcos Mitch. , Tomex L.

The position of the genus Callicarpa has often been discussed. For example, it was placed among the Verbenaceae and is classified in the Lamiaceae , with a still unclear position within the large family.

A division of the genus proposed in 1951 divides it into two sections based on characteristics of the stamens: Section Callicarpa with egg-shaped anthers that open via longitudinal slits and Section Verticirima with elongated anthers that open via pores at the tips.

The Callicarpa species are found in temperate, subtropical and tropical areas mainly in Asia and less often in the New World , in tropical areas in Australia and on some islands in the Pacific . There are around 48 species in China. About 23 species occur in Cuba, 22 of them only there and most of them are endemic to eastern Cuba.
