The technology magazine Chip (own spelling: CHIP ) is published in 14 countries in Europe and Asia and is one of the oldest computer magazines in Germany . The first edition was published by Vogel-Verlag in September 1978 . In addition to general news about computer and technology topics, the magazine is divided into different sections : trend, test and technology.

Chip serves a wide range of target groups with its articles : In addition to beginners and advanced users, according to the publisher, professionals and IT decision-makers can also get their money's worth.

Chip operates one of the largest German technology test centers with over 1500 product tests per year.

The magazine has been published by Chip Communications GmbH , a subsidiary of Chip Holding, which in turn is wholly owned by Hubert Burda Media , since the beginning of 2008 . The editor-in-chief has been Josef Reitberger since February 2012.

history

The long existence of the magazine is explained by the fact that the magazine rigorously changed again and again in order to adapt to the changing conditions of the computer market. In the first few issues, the focus was on calculators and programming . In the early 1980s, the focus shifted to home computers . Today the non-professional, private computer user is primarily addressed.

There are now several product offshoots:

  • Chip Foto-Video has been published monthly since 2003 and is aimed at those interested in digital photography. The sold circulation is 30,184 copies, a decrease of 54.5 percent since 2003.
  • Chip Test & Kauf was published monthly from 2004 to 2010 and bimonthly from 2011 to 2015 with a focus on testing and purchase advice. The sold circulation fell from 203,117 copies in the fourth quarter of 2004 to 16,887 copies in the fourth quarter of 2015, a decrease of 91.7 percent.
  • Chip tvtest (until 10/2012 under the name Chip HD-Welt ) has been appearing every three months since May 2013 as a 36-page supplement of Chip (2-DVD edition), in issues 3, 6, 9 and 12.
  • Chip Wissen has been published every two months since June 2018 as a youth magazine with a focus on science and technology.

There are also various special editions that appear at irregular intervals and each deal with a current focus topic from the digital world.

The chip booklets were available in different versions until 6/2019:

  • Chip with DVD
  • Chip Premium (with 2 DVDs)

A chip booklet will appear from 7/2019

  • CHIP Plus which combines the earlier versions.
