Chiqui de la Fuente
José Luis "Chiqui" de la Fuente (better known as Chiqui ; * 1933 in Santander , Cantabria , † 1992 in Madrid ) was a Spanish publisher and comic artist and the younger brother of the artists Victor and Ramon de la Fuente .
Life
childhood
Chiqui was born in Santander in 1933. A few weeks later he moved to Gijón , where he spent his childhood until the age of 15, then he sailed to Argentina with his brother Ramon. He did all kinds of work there. As an amateur artist he worked in Argentina for the magazine Crocodile .
Professional work
He returned to Spain where, with the help of his brother Ramon, he started as a cover artist for adventure comics such as Phantom and Flash Gordon (1958) for the Editorial Dólar Madrid. He then worked for Balalín, Fleetway and Thompson, where he drew caricatures. His early humorous work was based on a script by Fernando Asián , “Veneno y su Sombra” for the Spanish government's Piñón magazine ; “Super 3” for Selecciones Ilustradas from Barcelona, and then “Pampa”, in which he remembers his experiences in Argentina. Asián also wrote the script for the three comics based on stories from the Arabian Nights , Aladin , Sinbad and Ali Baba . Then he drew "Curro Peláez".
In 1971 he went to the comic magazine Trinca , where he made a name for himself throughout Spain with the series "Hector" and "Oliver", which were rewritten by his favorite author Fernando Asían. "Genicabra" and "Gag" for Gaceta Junior from Barcelona as well as other series such as "Abracadabra", "Marzy" and "Foot y Ball" for El Cuco, Sunday supplement of the Pueblo newspaper from Madrid, one of the first Sunday newspapers, are also based on Asian's writings the Spanish press.
Retirement work
The leap to international fame only came through an adaptation of the famous Las aventuras del Barón de Munchhausen , which was published as an animated short film in 1975 under the name The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen . This comic has been translated into almost every language spoken in Europe. Chiqui has created comics of the most important literary works for young people, for example Don Quixote , Journey around the world in 80 days , Moby-Dick and many more titles.
In 1976 he founded the JF Editions publishing house and had the Spanish comic book artists produce the erotic Muerde collection for this purpose.
In Germany, the series Hector the Hero of Aragon and the literary classics Aladin and the Magic Lamp , The Journey to the Center of the Earth , Baron Münchhausen and Tom Sawyer's Adventure appeared in issues 1 to 63 of the comic magazine Yps . Five other literary classics were published by Bertelsmann as Classic Comics in 1995: 1. Robin Hood , 2. The Three Musketeers , 3. Moby Dick , 4. Around the World in 80 Days and 5. Gulliver's Travels .
In his later years he stopped drawing comics, but devoted most of his time to publishing and promoting his works internationally.
recognition
After Faustino R. Arbesú
“The drawing by Chiqui de la Funte can be described as realism with a loss of rigidity, with which he embodied the best technique of drawing humor, whereby he managed to unite something really difficult in a harmonious form, he succeeds in this field of expression : realism and humorous caricature. He knew how to fuse the adventurous, realistic and humorous in his comics in his own drawing style. In his drawing he emphasizes the great use of the pen and a masterful use of modern and highly visual planning. "
