The Chitina River is an approximately 180 km long left tributary of the Copper River in southern Alaska (USA).
It rises near the border with the Canadian Yukon Territory in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park . The Chitina River is fed by an unnamed glacier south of the Chitina Glacier . It initially flows 4 km north. It then flows along the southern edge of the Chitina Glacier west-northwest. It continues its course below the glacier tongue of the Chitina Glacier and flows into the Copper River at Chitina , which flows into the Gulf of Alaska . Left tributaries of the Chitina River are Goat Creek , Kiagna River , Tana River , Chakina River, and Tebay River . The Nizina River , Gilahina River and Kuskulana River flow into the right bank of the river .
Henry Tureman Allen documented "Chittyna" in 1885 as the Alaskan name for the river. As early as 1870 the names "Chechitno" and "Chetchitno" were recorded.
