Chitinophaga pinensis is a type of bacteria and belongs to the Chitinophagaceae family . It is the type species of the genus Chitinophaga . The generic name is composed of the Latin word chitinum for "chitin" and the Greek word "phagein" for "to eat" and refers to the ability of some speciesto digest chitin . The species name C. pinensis refers to the Latin adjective "pinensis", which means something like "belong to pines"; the species was first isolated from the litter of a pine. The genome of Chitinophaga pinensis was completely analyzed in 2010.
Appearance
The cells of Chitinophaga pinensis are rod-shaped with rounded corners. The size is between 0.5 and 0.8 µm in width and up to 40 µm in length. Stages of rest, so-called microcysts, are formed. The diameter is approx. 0.8 to 0.9 µm. They are movable by sliding. The colonies are colored yellow. The gram test is negative. Tolerated temperatures for growth are in the range of 10 to 40 ° C, optimal growth occurs at 23–24 ° C.
Growth and metabolism
Chitinophaga pinensis is chemo-organotrophic and aerobic , the metabolism is respiration . The catalase and urease tests are positive, the oxidase test is negative. A special feature is the ability to hydrolyze chitin . The GC content is 43 to 46%.
