The manuscript consists of 300 parchment sheets measuring 24.8 cm × 32.2 cm. It contains the texts of the four gospels of the New Testament . Eight miniatures have been preserved that depict the four evangelists and their symbols . The depiction of the winged man as a symbol of Matthew was possibly designed by Andrei Rublev , another two miniatures possibly by Theophanes the Greek . Some initials are elaborately decorated and provided with zoomorphic patterns.

The representations were probably made between 1390 and 1400; similar images are known from this period. The place of origin could have been the Trinity Monastery near Moscow . In 1677 the boyar Bogdan Chitrowo received the handwriting of Tsar Fyodor III. given. He passed them on to the Trinity Monastery. It has been in the holdings of the Russian State Library in Moscow since 1920 .
