Choiseul (originally: Anse Citron ) is the capital of the Choiseul quarter (district) in the south of the small island state of St. Lucia . The place was founded in 1765 and later named after the Duke of Choiseul .
geography
The place has only one road worth mentioning that comes from the northwest of Soufrière and passes the two Pitons . The road then runs along the coast and continues east to Laborie . The focus of the settlement is in the mouth of the River Dorée in the southeast of the village.
history
In 1769 a census recorded 75 whites, 25 free colored, 512 negroes and 69 buildings in Choiseul. In 1864 an Anglican Church was built on the River Dorée and the first school was founded in 1848. The area was mainly cultivated by English plantation owners. At the end of the 19th century the population had grown to around 4,000 people.
Father Pierre Prudent René built a Catholic church at the end of the 19th century , which was consecrated in 1914.
economy
Choiseul mainly produces household goods for the island's needs, for example grass mats, chairs, coal warmer and baskets.
