The Chonnam National University ( English : Chonnam National University ) is a state university in South Korea . The main campus is located in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju .

The name Chonnam (also Jeonnam , 전남 ) is the short form of Jeollanam-do ( ).

history

The university was founded in January 1952 with five colleges (faculties):

  • Engineering (newly founded),
  • Agricultural Science (predecessor: Gwangju Provincial Agricultural College, founded in 1909),
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences (predecessor: private Daeseong University, founded 1951),
  • Commercial Science (predecessor: Mokpo Provincial Commercial College , founded in 1920), and
  • Medicine (predecessor: Gwangju Provincial Medical College, founded in 1944).

In May 1954 it was given the site for today's Yongbong campus, and after a few years the colleges moved to the new campus. In April 1958, the Mokpo Commercial Science College moved to Gwangju.

It was students from Chonnam University who demonstrated on May 18, 1980 against the closings of universities in the country, against the military dictatorship, against the imposed martial law and for the release of Kim Dae-jung , and after the escalation with the police and military units took the lead in the Gwangju uprising . Many students lost their lives when the nine-day uprising was bloodily crushed by the military. To commemorate the events, the May 18 memorial hall was inaugurated on the university campus on May 18, 2005.

In March 2006, the University of Yeosu (English Yosu National University , founded in 1917) was merged to form Chonnam University.
