The ChorForum Wien is a non-profit association for the promotion of choral music in Vienna and the surrounding area. It was founded in May 2001 as the ninth regional umbrella organization within the Austrian Choir Association . Before that, the Viennese choirs were represented in a joint choir association Lower Austria and Vienna .

The forum sees itself as the umbrella organization for all choirs in the federal state of Vienna and the surrounding communities, regardless of the type of choir (equal or mixed , adult, school or youth choir ), their legal personality ( association or no association) and their other affiliation (school , University, church choir ). Among the many activities and the support of the member choirs, the forum organizes the Vienna Choir Festival every year .

At the time of its founding in 2001, the ChorForum Vienna had 22 member choirs , a few years later 50 and in mid-2019 already 135. According to Cantate magazine, around 10 new members join each year, which shows the growing awareness of the association's activities. The total number of choirs in Vienna is estimated at a few hundred, plus about 200 pure church choirs . The number of choirs is even higher in the surrounding communities.

The ChorForum Wien awards the Leo Lehner plaque in memory of the Austrian composer, choir director and music teacher Leo Lehner . Prize winners were Elisabeth Ziegler for the 50-year choir directing the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen , Florian Maierl for his Coro siamo choir and the Radio Wien choir (2019).

Areas of activity and services

In addition to organizing concerts and promoting cooperation between the choirs, the Vienna umbrella association offers its member choirs various services:

as a communication platform on different levels,

as a mouthpiece to the public , contacts to the city administration, the churches and possible organizers,

as a partner in musical and organizational matters,

z. E.g. with Wanted - Found (choir is looking for a new conductor and vice versa), sheet music distribution, etc.

Seminar offers, workshops and voice training courses

as organizer of the annual Vienna Choir Festival (formerly Week of the Vienna Choirs) in June and from Jugend sings in autumn

as a contact person for all choral music matters,

for honoring deserved personalities,

and from 2014 the publication of the Vienna Choir Calendar .

The choir magazine Cantate is published 3 times a year

The activities of the Wiener ChorForum are supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Vienna and BASIS.KULTUR.WIEN.

In 2009/10 the foundation of the State Youth Choir Vienna under Michael Grohotolsky
the gala concert for the 10th anniversary (May 2011) in the Vienna City Hall with over 700 participants
the Advent concert in the anniversary year (with 4 choirs) in December 2011
the opening concert of the Vienna Choir Week , June 2014
from 2018 artistic director of the State Youth Choir Vienna by Florian Schwarz
