Chowd ( Mongolian Ховд ; in older sources also Kobdo ) is a city in Mongolia and the capital of the province of the same name .

geography

Chowd is located at the foot of the Altai Mountains and has about 30,000 inhabitants (as of 2006). The Bujant Gol River flows on the edge of the city .

The city of Khovd is the administrative center of the aimag of the same name .

traffic

Khovd Airport (ZMKD / HVD) has two runways (one paved) and is served by Aero Mongolia with regular flights to and from Ulaanbaatar .

Culture

In Khovd there is a large theater, a museum, a children's palace and a stadium. The theater was renovated in the spring of 2006. In addition to smaller concerts by local artists, it also stages dramas and operas and sometimes shows films. Most of the artists come from Ulaanbaatar. National costumes, silver items, porcelain items, stone items, precious stones and horse head violins are exhibited in the museum. Recently the Children's Palace was built. There are many leisure activities here, e.g. B. Dance and singing lessons and a gallery. It also has a wedding hall. In the summer the Mongolian national holiday is celebrated in the stadium "Naadam". a. Archery, horse racing and wrestling are performed.

education

There are ten kindergartens in which children between the ages of two and six are raised and looked after. Up until 2007, compulsory schooling was ten years. This has been eleven years since 2008. After compulsory schooling, students can take their Abitur.

There are two universities in the city. The Agricultural University and the Khovd University . Khovd University was founded in 1979 as a branch of Mongolian State University, but has been independent since 2004. It has eleven faculties: physics , foreign languages , accounting , mathematics , physiology , chemistry , biology , Mongolian , sports , sociology , performing arts . About 1,800 students from all aimags of western Mongolia (Uws, Gobi-Altai, Bayn-Ölgie, Zawhan) and from the People's Republic of Tuva (belonging to Russia) study at Chowd University. It also has two student residences with around 500 students. Chowd University has two library halls and a central library. It houses the American library, which is part of the American Center.

There is also a children's library in the “Children's Palace” and a German-language “Swiss library” in the city.

economy

In Khovd many people work in individual farming. They raise cattle or grow vegetables. The dairy products and vegetables are sold in the market.

Chowd is also known for its small watermelons and the sugar melons grown in buyant-sum.

Other jobs are offered by schools, kindergartens, banks, universities, hospitals and the government. Many international organizations also work in Khovd; UNDP , UNFDP , WWF and SDC have branches in Khovd.

Shopping possibilities are u. a. in the market where almost anything can be bought, in the branch of the " Nomin " chain or at numerous retailers.

Mobicom , one of the two cell phone providers, has a branch in Khovd.
