Christine Elizabeth Clark (born February 1, 1946 in Santa Cruz , California ), better known as Chris Clark is an American soul , jazz and blues singer who was active with Motown Records . She was best known as a Northern Soul artist.

Life

Her musical career began in the 1960s when she was one of the few "white" artists like Bobby Darin and Rare Earth to receive a contract on the soul label Motown Records . She was discovered by Hal Davis , who arranged an audition for Berry Gordy in Detroit. Her debut single was Do Right Baby, Do Right . Together with Gordy she wrote some songs. The two also became a couple. In 1969 she became the vice president of Motown's film division. She became famous for her screenplay for Lady Sings the Blues , the biography of Billie Holiday , which she wrote with Suzanne de Passe and Terence McCloy and for which she received an Oscar nomination. Clark also worked as a photographer for the label and stayed with the label until 1989, though the relationship with Gordy broke up in the 1970s. Instead, she married screenwriter Ernest Tidyman in 1982 . She was his fourth wife.

Their biggest hit was the song Love's Gone Bad , the 1966 No. 41 that of Billboard determined Hot R & B Singles reached. Their first LP Soul Sounds was released in 1967 and their second LP CC Rides Again in 1969 . In the United States, she was received with resentment due to her way of singing, which was otherwise reserved for blacks. Her relationship with Gordy was also interpreted negatively for racist reasons. In contrast, it was very popular in England, where they racist From today's perspective, but quite flattering nickname meant "the White Negress" ( "The White Negro received").

After separating from Motown, she initially withdrew from the public. When an anthology CD was released in England in 2005, she began performing again, initially as the opening act for a Temptations / Four Tops tour.
