Chris Donnelly

Christopher Nigel Donnelly (born November 10, 1946 in Rochdale , Lancashire , Great Britain ) is a British military scientist and reserve officer who has worked for NATO for a long time . He is an expert in defense, security and foreign policy. He is currently the Director of the Institute for Statecraft (IfS), which is based in Fife , Scotland and whose head office is, according to LobbyFacts, in Two Temple Place , London .

biography

Chris Donnelly was born on November 10, 1946 in Rochdale, Lancashire, to Anthony Donnelly and Dorothy M. Morris. He attended Cardinal Langley School in Middleton, Lancashire . In 1969 he graduated from Manchester University . From 1970 to 1993 he served as a reserve officer in the British Territorial Army . From 1989 to 2003 he worked as special advisor on Central and Eastern European affairs to four NATO secretaries-general , most recently for Lord Robertson . He was an advisor to the Foreign Minister of Lithuania . Before joining NATO in 1989, he worked at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for twenty years , initially as an instructor for Russian and Soviet studies and from 1973 as a member of the Soviet Studies Research Center , which he held from 1979 to 1989 directed. As an adjunct professor , he taught at Carnegie Mellon University (1985–89) and Georgia Technical University (1989–93). He was the founder and head of the Advanced Research and Assessment Group at the Defense Academy of the United Kingdom 2003–2007, Senior Fellow 2007–10. His research interests include the reform of defense and security institutions in Central and Eastern European countries after the end of the Cold War, as well as the development of cooperation between the Eastern and Western defense institutions.

Donnelly has published several books, including Red Banner - the Soviet Military System in Peace and War (1988), and is the author of numerous articles on Russian and Soviet military and political issues, as well as Eastern European defense and security issues. The honors and awards he has received include Honorary Colonel of the Specialist Group Military Intelligence (SGMI) and Commander ( Grand Cross ) of the Order of Grand Duke Gediminas ( Lithuania ) in 2002. He has been married to Jill Norris since 1971, she have a son and a daughter.
