Christopher "Chris" Hughes (born November 26, 1983 in Hickory , North Carolina ) is an American entrepreneur. Alongside Mark Zuckerberg , Dustin Moskovitz , Eduardo Saverin and Andrew McCollum, he was one of the co-founders and spokesman for the online network Facebook .

Life

Hughes is the only child of a retired teacher and former newspaper seller. He is a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover , Massachusetts . Together with his flatmates at Harvard University - Zuckerberg, Moskovitz and Saverin - he founded Facebook in 2004 , which is now the world's most widely used social network. When Facebook expanded beyond Harvard's borders, he voted for each school to be able to set up its own network - so that security and familiarity remain intact. He graduated from Harvard University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

In 2007 he left Facebook to support Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He coordinated the My.BarackObama.com website. ("MyBO" for short). Over a million of Obama's supporters used the platform to network with one another, to discuss and to form action groups. In the US, Hughes is considered the genius behind the former US president's online strategy. Among other things, he used Facebook, Twitter and other online portals during the election campaign. He showed what influence digital natives can have on business and politics. The American business magazine Fast Company described him as the man who, as a member of Obama's campaign team, helped Barack Obama to the presidency. In 2009 he was a guest at President Obama's first state dinner with his partner, Sean Eldridge.

In 2010, Hughes founded the social internet network "Jumo", which focused on the NPO sector and was to be open to charities around the world as well as to other users. In the language of the Yoruba people living in Africa , Jumo means "pulling together". Accordingly, Jumo had set itself the goal of bringing together social organizations and volunteers for worldwide aid projects. People who want to get involved in society should find it easier to find the right organization, to get in contact with them and, if necessary, to support them. In August 2011, Jumo was taken over by Good Worldwide Inc. and the project was then merged with GOOD magazine.

In July 2010 Hughes was appointed by UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS) to a high-profile commission on HIV prevention. In addition to Hughes, well-known politicians such as the former President of France Jacques Chirac and the former President of the Bundestag Rita Süssmuth , but also entrepreneurs, human rights activists, athletes and scientists are represented in this 17-member “High Level Commission” . During 2011, members should bring their contacts and experience to the table and work towards effective and effective prevention programs.

Today Hughes lives with his partner Sean Eldridge (political director of the Freedom to Marry initiative ) in New York and works for the venture capital company General Catalyst Partners . However, he is still involved in Facebook and continues to act as a consultant to help develop the company.
