Christopher James "Chris" Kluwe (* 24. December 1981 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the punters . He played eight years with the Minnesota Vikings in the National Football League (NFL).

Career

college

Kluwe played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and became one of the top punters in the Pacific-10 Conference . He broke two records in college: the yards scored by punts and the number of punts in a season. Overall, Chris Kluwe performed for the UCLA 93 punts for around 4,000 yards.

NFL

The Seattle Seahawks signed Kluwe in 2005 as a free agent. However, he did not make it into the squad for the regular season , whereupon the Minnesota Vikings signed him . Kluwe averaged 44 yards per punt, making him the second best punter in the National Football Conference (NFC). In a punt, he injured his ankle after an attack by the Detroit Lions safety , Vernon Fox . Darren Bennett , who was 42 at the time , was signed as a replacement, but Kluwe only missed one game.

In October 2007, Chris Kluwe extended his contract for a further six years until 2013.

After the 2013 NFL Draft , in which the Minnesota Vikings punter Jeff Locke (also from UCLA) selected in the fifth round, Kluwe was fired from the Vikings. After his release, there was speculation that his political commitment to same-sex marriage could also have been a decisive factor in his release. After Kluwe had publicly expressed allegations to the coach and owner of the Minnesota Vikings in an interview at the end of 2013, the Vikings issued a statement in which they underlined that they had only fired Kluwe because of sporting issues. A short time later he was obliged by the Oakland Raiders , but released before the start of the season. After a year as a free agent, he announced the end of his career.
