Chris Obure

Christopher "Chris" Mogere Obure (born September 29, 1943 in Gucha District , Nyanza Province , Kenya ) is a Kenyan politician who was Kenya's Foreign Minister in 2001.

Life

After attending school, Mogere completed a degree in commercial management at the University of Nairobi , which he completed with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.). He then worked as an employee of Kenya Breweries Limited .

In 1999 he was initially Minister for Industrial Development and Minister for Cooperative Development in the government of President Daniel arap Moi and then, after a government reshuffle in 1999, as successor to Musalia Mudavadi until he was replaced by Bonaya Godana in 2001, Minister of Agriculture.

In another cabinet reshuffle, President arap Moi appointed him Foreign Minister in 2001 to succeed Bonaya Godana. However, he only held this office for a short time and was then replaced by Marsden Madoka . He himself then succeeded Chris Okemo as finance minister in 2001 and also held this position under arap Moi's successor Mwai Kibaki until he was replaced by David Mwiraria in 2003.

Obure, who had joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) founded by Raila Odinga in 2005 , was elected a member of the National Assembly in the elections on December 27, 2007 and represented the constituency of Bobasi until the 2013 elections . After Odinga was appointed Prime Minister of Kenya by President Kibaki on April 13, 2008, Obure took over the post of Minister for Public Works, which he held until the end of Odinga's term in April 2013. At the same time, between 2008 and 2009, he was acting minister for roads for some time.

In the parliamentary elections in March 2013, Obure was elected a member of the Senate and has since represented the constituency of Kisii County .
