Bonaya Godana

Bonaya Adhi Godana (born September 2, 1952 in Dukana , North-Eastern Province , Kenya ; † April 10, 2006 in Marsabit , Eastern Province in a plane crash ) was a Kenyan politician who was Foreign Minister between 1998 and 2001.

Life

Godana, who came from the Gabbra people , completed a law degree at the University of Nairobi after attending school , initially with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1973 and a Master of Laws (LL.M. ) In 1976 .) ended. He then started working as a lawyer and between 1980 and 1984 completed postgraduate studies at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies at the University of Geneva . There he obtained a doctorate in philosophy ( Ph.D. ) in international law in 1984 . After returning to Kenya, he returned to practice as a lawyer before accepting a professorship in public law at the University of Nairobi in 1986 .

In the parliamentary elections in 1988, Godana was elected as a candidate of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) for the first time as a member of the National Assembly and represented the constituency of North Horr until his death .

In 1998 he was appointed by President Daniel arap Moi to succeed Kalonzo Musyoka as Foreign Minister in his cabinet and held this position until he was replaced by Chris Obure in a cabinet reshuffle in 2001. He himself then succeeded Obure as Minister of Agriculture in this cabinet reshuffle and retained this ministerial post until he was replaced in 2003 by Kipruto Rono Arap Kirwa . During his tenure as Foreign Minister, the arrest of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in Nairobi took place in February 1999 .

After leaving the government, he was deputy opposition leader and thus de facto vice-chairman of the KANU faction in the National Assembly.

Godana was killed on April 10, 2006 along with five other members of parliament in a plane crash near Marsabit.
