Chris Scarre

Christopher "Chris" Scarre (born November 7, 1954 ) is a British archaeologist and is considered a specialist in the prehistory of Western Europe, especially the British Isles , Portugal , France , located on the Atlantic coast . His research focuses on the study of prehistoric monuments , burial sites and belief systems. In doing so, he considers these under the aspects of auditory and sound factors, as well as usable materials and the surrounding landscape.

Life

Christopher Scarre studied at the University of Cambridge , where he received a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. received. In his dissertation he dealt with the reaction of prehistoric people to changes in the landscape in coastal marshland in western France. From 1990 to 2005 he worked at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, first as Assistant Director , then as Deputy Director . In January 2006 he was appointed professor of prehistory in the Department of Archeology at Durham University . In addition to his teaching activities, he has been the editor of the specialist magazine Antiquity since January 2013 . Prior to that, he was editor of the Cambridge Archaeological Journal from 1990 to 2005 .

In the course of his archaeological research, Scarre carried out excavations in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands , France, Greece and Portugal. From 1995 to 2004, together with French archaeologists, he led a major excavation of Neolithic long beds in Prissé-la-Charrière (today: Plaine-d'Argenson municipality ) in western France.

In 2006 he was an invited lecturer at the Collège de France . In 2007 he was elected trustee of the Council for British Archeology .

The philosopher Geoffrey Scarre is his brother. With this he published the book The Ethics of Archeology in 2006 .
