Christine Joy "Chrissy" Amphlett (born October 25, 1959 in Geelong , Australia ; † April 21, 2013 in New York City , United States ) was an Australian singer , songwriter and actress . She became known as the lead singer of the Australian rock band Divinyls .

Chrissy Amphlett grew up in Geelong, a port city in Australia. She graduated from Belmont High School. As a teenager, Chrissy traveled to England , France and Spain , where she was imprisoned for three months for singing on the street.

In 1980 Chrissy Amphlett founded the band Divinyls . 17 years later the band separated again. The biggest hit of the band Divinyls in 1991 was the song I Touch Myself . In 2006 the Divinyls were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA ) Hall of Fame. The band released one more single until they split again in 2009.

On July 27, 1999, Chrissy married the American drummer Charley Drayton , who had been the drummer of their reformed group Divinyls since 1991 .

In a 2007 interview on Nine Network , Chrissy Amphlett shared that she had multiple sclerosis . In 2010 she announced that she had breast cancer and was being treated in New York, where she lived with her husband. On January 24, 2011, Amphlett reported that she had beaten cancer . She died of complications from breast cancer and multiple sclerosis in New York at the age of 53 . Because she had MS, she could not undergo radiation treatment or chemotherapy .
