Christina Marie Houlahan (* 5. June 1967 as Christina Marie Jampoler at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River , Maryland ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Since January 3, 2019, she has been a member of the State of Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives .

Life

Chrissy Houlahan, whose father was a member of the United States Navy , spent her childhood and youth on several military bases across the United States. Houlahan's father came to the United States as a child fleeing the Holocaust from Poland. She studied engineering at Stanford University . After graduating with a bachelor's degree, Houlahan joined the military and spent several years at Hanscom Air Force Base . She has the military edge of a captain . In 1994 she graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Masters of Science degree in technology . Houlahan joined the Teach For America organization and worked for a year as a teacher at Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia .

In 2017, Houlahan, who had no previous political experience, ran for the United States House election the following year. As the only candidate for the Democratic Party, Houlahan stood against Republican Greg McCauley, against whom she was able to prevail in the November 6, 2018 election with 58.8 percent of the vote. Houlahan took office on January 3, 2019. She represents in the House of Representatives the sixth congressional electoral district , which includes Chester County and part of Berks County and was historically more Republican-dominated. Houlahan is the first female Democrat to represent this Congressional constituency since it was formed in 2002. In her election campaign, Chrissy Houlahan was supported by organizations such as EMILY's List , Human Rights Campaign , the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the veteran organization VoteVets.org . Houlahan is in favor of government setting drug prices and the introduction of a health insurance system, while rejecting citizens' insurance . In January 2019, she spoke out against the withdrawal of American troops from the civil war in Syria . In the House of Representatives, Chrissy Houlahan is a member of the Committee on Armed Services , the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Small Businesses .

Chrissy Houlahan is married and has two grown daughters. She lives with her husband in Devon, Pennsylvania .
