history

Christ Church Cathedral around 1860

There has been an Anglican parish in Montreal since it was conquered by British troops in 1760. Initially, the faithful used various Roman Catholic chapels. The first purely Anglican church was built in 1814 on Rue Notre-Dame . After the establishment of the Diocese of Montreal, it was given cathedral status in 1850. In 1856 it was completely destroyed in a major fire, only one altarpiece remained.

View of the interior

The architect Frank Wills , who had also designed the Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton , was commissioned to plan a new building. However, he died before construction began, whereupon Thomas Seaton Scott took over the management. The work was completed in 1859 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1867.

From an architectural point of view, the cathedral has always been considered an outstanding example of English neo-Gothic, but the structural engineering was poor. Because of the soft ground, the heavy stone church tower began to sag and deform. In the 1920s it sloped more than a meter to the south. The 1600 ton tower had to be demolished in 1927. In 1939 a new concrete foundation was poured. An anonymous donation made it possible to build a significantly lighter tower with an aluminum core in 1940 .

In 1987, KPMG , a 146-meter-high skyscraper , was built just north of the Tour . The project also included the construction of a parking garage and a shopping center below the cathedral. For this purpose 33 hollow cylindrical steel pillars ( caissons ) were driven into the rock under the cathedral foundation, ten of them from the crypt . About the caissons massive prestressed were reinforced concrete - carrier added that bear the weight of the cathedral. In the area of the church tower, digging had to be done by hand.

organ

The organ was built in 1981 by the organ builder Karl Wilhelm (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec). The instrument has 42 registers on three manual works and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
