History and architecture

The church was built in 1926 on the spot where the Annunciation Church from 1759/1760 stood. This was badly damaged by fire during the uprising of 1847, but was renovated in the following period. In 1925 the old church was demolished to build the Ascension Church. The cross-domed church was built according to a design by Darko Popović, which is based on the Serbian-Byzantine style . The architects were Josif Ginder, Đoka Bošković and Mita Bakić from Bečej .

The church is 45 meters long and 25 meters wide. The size and height of the domes was achieved by building double arches in steps and each ending at the dome roof . In particular, the 37 m high main dome appears monumental. The church is built in the style of the Morava school and corresponds to a copy of the Serbian Orthodox Gračanica monastery in Kosovo .

The frescoes inside the church, painted by Žarko Milinov from Šajkaš , are artistically very valuable and well known in the Serbian Banat . The frescoes are based on the mosaics from the Church of St. George on Oplenac . From the old Orthodox church of Ada, the baroque iconostasis , carved by Jovan Sitkei and gilded by Nikola Dimšić, was built into the new, much lower altar wall . The 32 icons of the church were painted in oil on canvas by Novak Radonjić between 1867 and 1869. Radonjić is considered one of the most important representatives of Serbian historicism .

On July 13, 1949, the Church was placed under Serbian state protection by the Institute for Scientific Research and Monument Protection . Restoration work was carried out on the church in 1966 and 2002. The parish has 110 Serbian Orthodox households.
