Christian Hendrik Persoon (born December 31, 1761 in the Cape Colony , † November 16, 1836 in Paris ) was a mycologist and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Pers. "

Life

Persoon descended from Dutch and German ancestors and was born in South Africa. At the age of 12 he was admitted to the Latin school in Lingen on August 14, 1775 and enrolled at the local university in 1780. As a student he met Alexander von Humboldt in Göttingen . In 1800 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and in 1809 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Persoon revised and expanded the systematics of mushrooms established by Carl von Linné . Together with his contemporary Elias Magnus Fries , he is considered the father of modern mycology. An important nomenclature achievement was the establishment of the subspecies as a rank by him.

He died completely impoverished in Paris.

Honors

In his honor, John Edward Smith named the genus Persoonia of the silver tree family (Proteaceae). Also the mushroom genera Persooniana Britzelm. and Persooniella Syd. are named after him.

The magazine Persoonia , which has been published since 1959, is named after him.
