Christian Albrecht Ermel (also: Albert ) (born January 21, 1673 in Schönfeld near Lübbenau; † November 24, 1737 in Lübbenau ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman who worked as a deacon at the St. Nikolai Church in Lübbenau . He wrote Christian edification books, set up an extensive private library and bequeathed it to his church in his will. The entire library has been kept in the Brandenburg Cathedral Abbey Archives since 1975 .

Life

Christian Albrecht Ermel was the eldest son of the evangelical pastor Valentin Ermel (* December 31, 1641 - February 10, 1723) from Schönfeld near Lübbenau. After attending the Bohnstedt-Gymnasium in Luckau , he studied theology like his father at the University of Wittenberg , began on September 24, 1696 as cantor in Lübbenau, rose to the post of subdiacon and rector in 1702 and was from 1706 until his death 31 Years as a deacon (2nd pastor) at the Lübbenau Nikolaikirche.

The library

During his parish office, Ermel invested a lot of money and energy in building up an extensive private library, primarily with works of Lutheran orthodoxy . In addition to over four hundred titles, there were also anthologies with over seven hundred dissertations. His plan was to lay the foundation stone for an extensive church library accessible to clergy and school teachers, which was to be housed in the Nikolaikirche and which would continue to be increased after his death. He also expressed this in detail in his will. According to his wishes, the local rulers, the Count of Lynar , should have the overall supervision and the respective deacon should run the library. The development did not go as expected. The library was not placed in the sacristy of the church building, which was newly built from 1738 to 1741, and an increase left a lot to be desired; in the 19th century, only 12 titles were added. After several moves, the entire collection has been in the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery Archive since 1975 as a deposit of the Evangelical Church Community in Lübbenau.

family

Christian Albrecht's father Valentin came from Calau . The grandfather was also called Valentin Ermel and was councilor and mayor there (1652 to 1653). Through his Calau ancestors, Christian Albrecht is related to the branch of the Grimma Princely School Principal Georg Ermel .

Christian Albrecht Ermel was married to Anna Rosina, b. Wind (en), from 1699 until her death in 1728. Both sons from this marriage died early. On September 7th, 1729 he married the widow Aemilia Kroschwitz, b. Franck. The marriage remained childless. As a lasting memory of her husband, Aemilia had an epitaph built on which she described in detail the life of the deacon.

Ermel's brother Siegismund Ermel (* 1677 in Schönfeld; † September 17, 1729 there) was pastor in Schönfeld. He succeeded his father Valentin in 1708 and worked there until his death in 1729.
