Christian Berger (born December 9, 1950 ) is a former German football player who was active between 1971 and 1977 for BSG Stahl Riesa in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

Until 1968 Christian Berger played in the junior division of the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Premnitz . During the 1968/69 season he was part of the second team of BSG Stahl Riesa, which was represented in the third-rate Dresden district league . Then Berger moved to league rivals TSG Gröditz . When the top division team of Stahl Riesa lost two regular players on a long-term basis during the 1970/71 season, Berger was brought back at the beginning of the second half of the season and then used as a midfielder in all thirteen top division games until the end of the season. In 1971/72 he was injured for months after the fifth match day and was only able to play two league games at the end of the season. Then Stahl Riesa had to relegate to the GDR league , but managed to get promoted again immediately. Berger was instrumental in this, because he was not only used in all 22 point games, but also played all eight games of the promotion round and scored a total of five goals. The 1973/74 season was again characterized by several injury breaks, so that he could only play in seventeen of the 26 league games. In the following two seasons he was only used in four or three league matches, in 1975/76 he was not even part of the official league squad. There he was named again for 1976/77 and also regularly played the first seven point games. After that he was only used irregularly in six other point games. At the end of the season Berger was dismissed after seven seasons and 57 league games with three goals and 30 second division games with five goals at Stahl Riesa. He returned to TSG Gröditz, which was now playing in the GDR league. 1977/78 Berger completed all 22 league games, but was only used in ten point games in the following season. This was followed by relegation to the district league and immediate return to the GDR league. Berger was still active there for four seasons, in which 72 of 88 point games played. After 104 GDR league games for TSG Gröditz, he ended his career as a competitive athlete after the 1983/84 season.
