"Justified Beliefs"

Before studying art, Christian Falsnaes began performing and interacting in public spaces in Copenhagen . Since 2009 he has been developing performances based on a ready-made script. In the beginning he himself played a central role and motivated the audience to actively participate in the action in order to experience himself as a person and as part of a work of art. The viewer should cross personal boundaries through active inclusion, overcome them and feel the moment of liberation and change. Falsnaes said in an interview:

"When I involve the viewer in the process of art production, it is also about sharing all of this instead of just showing the result of my private artistic process."

Dealing with authority, hierarchies, social and especially pop-cultural rituals is an integral part of his art.

“Dealing with the structure of power, or with group dynamics, is in itself political. For me, it's not so much about people following or reacting in a certain way, but about making the audience feel how certain rituals affect them. ”Christian Falsnaes

In his more recent work, Falsnaes withdraws more and more physically from the actions. The instructions to the audience are now given by headphones, loudspeakers or by employed "instructors". Often his performances are now carried out as "female versions" in which the former role of Falsnaes is taken over by female artists. He himself often mingles with the audience and takes part as a spectator. By withdrawing his artistic person, an additional transfer of authority takes place, which involves the audience even more in his art. Many performances are documented in video recordings. However, there are also works of art that emerge from the actions, such as canvases that have been painted by the audience according to the artist's instructions. Or the so-called “surface memory”, in which a canvas with paint is peeled off in public space on walls or bus stops and documented with photos.
