Christian Gotthold Contius (born November 19, 1750 in Hunswalde, † November 8, 1816 in Dommitzsch ) was a German Protestant theologian and poet.

Life

Contius was the son of a pastor from Hunswalde near Bischofswerda . From 1764 to 1767 he attended the school of the Francke Foundation in Halle . He then began studying theology in Leipzig in 1768 , which he completed in 1772 with the acquisition of a master's degree . As a result, he took a job as a preacher in Dollenchen . From there, Contius moved to Hoyerswerda as archdeacon in 1798 . In 1805 he was appointed preacher and pastor to Dommitzsch.

Contius made a name for himself with his large number of poems (odes), which he published in many of his own writings, as well as weekly and monthly newspapers. He also published other works. Very talented in terms of art and craftsmanship, he mostly engraved the vignettes for his poems himself. He also engraved some sheets of paper after Dietrich, Schönau and other artists.

On his death, Contius left his widow Johanna Friederike geb. Lessing (1758–1831) and two sons and two daughters.
