Christian Gottlob Hempel (born November 1748 in Horburg ; died February 11, 1824 in Leipzig ) was a German theologian, philologist, song poet, playwright and author of satirical and contemporary writings.

Life

Hempel studied theology in Leipzig and graduated in 1772 with the master's degree . He lived as a private scholar in Leipzig until his death . Nothing is known about his further living conditions.

His mostly anonymously published writings include epistles and sacred songs, a comedy directed against Basedow's philanthropinism ( Der Lehrmeister nach der Mode 1778), depictions of Pestalozzi's teachings , a critical work in which he deals with the moral decline of the nobility ( Kurzer Outline of the newest European memorabilia 1788 f.) And several theological, especially anti-Catholic writings.

As an example of Hempel's satirical and cultural-critical poems, the poem Der Held :

Is it not the hero's greatest glory,
To defeat men with murderous methods?
But some of them deal with murder and manslaughter,
and they don't usually bring it up.
He is punished and called stupid.
Do not ask why?
He has no privilege.
