Johann Christian Hohnbaum (born November 6, 1747 in Rodach ; † November 13, 1825 ) was a poet of sacred songs and co-editor of the Hildburghausen village newspaper.

Live and act

Christian Hohnbaum came from one of the oldest families in the city. Most of his ancestors were master bakers, but also mayors, like his father. His mother was the Council Chamberlain’s daughter.

Hohnbaum grew up with five older siblings. Because he was a little weak, he was supposed to be a barber and not a baker . In order to learn the Latin necessary for this , his parents sent him to the council school in Coburg . After a short time he entered the Casimirianum high school , which he attended from autumn 1761 to 1766. From February 23, 1767 he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Göttingen . On June 13, 1770, he took the theological exam in Coburg. In the family of Baron von Könitz zu Untersiemau he took up a position as private tutor . There he met the baron Christian Truchseß von Wetzhausen , with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

The pastor of Großheirath had a great influence on his future life . In January 1775 three candidates were proposed for the position of deacon in Rodach. On February 2, 1775, Hohnbaum gave his sermon as a trial. On the express orders of Duke Ernst Friedrich , the young cleric had heard a sermon that was posted on February 10, 1775 as a deacon in Rodach ordained . The duke appointed him as court deacon of Coburg in the spring. After the court preacher's death there , he was appointed his successor in 1780.

In 1786 he returned to his hometown Rodach as superintendent . His area of office coincided roughly with today's ephoria . He and his large family moved into the newly built rectory at today's Herrengasse 6, whose large living room also served as a study. He had a lifelong friendship with the poet and linguist Friedrich Rückert , whom he invited to Rodach.

Christian Hohnbaum died on November 13, 1825, shortly after his 78th birthday. His tomb is still preserved, as is a memorial created by E. Wegner and inaugurated on November 1, 1907; it is under monument protection (D-73-158-30).

The doctor and publicist Carl Hohnbaum (born January 12, 1780 in Coburg, † September 17, 1855 in Hildburghausen) was his son.
