Christian Janentzky (born January 29, 1886 in Rostock , † August 27, 1968 in Dresden ) was a literary scholar and director of the library of the TH Dresden . His focus was on the literature of the 18th and early 19th centuries, especially mysticism and Lavater .

After graduating from high school in Rostock , Janentzky studied German literature, philosophy, history and religious studies at the LMU Munich from 1904 to 1909 . There, after completing his doctorate and habilitation, he became a private lecturer in 1916 and, from 1920, an associate professor of modern German literary history. In 1922 he became a full professor at the Technical University of Dresden for German language and literature. At the same time he was a lecturer at the University of Veterinary Medicine and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden . From 1926 to 1928 he was chairman of the Dresden branch of the Goethe Society in Weimar. In November 1933 he signed the confession of the German professors about Adolf Hitler . In 1934 he was reprimanded for standing up for Professors Paul Luchtenberg and Rainer Fetscher , who were persecuted by the National Socialists . The retirement was withdrawn because of the important subject of German.

From 1946 to 1952 he again held the chair for German language and literature and was temporarily dean of the department for cultural studies and acting head of the historical seminar. In November 1945 he also took over provisional management of the university library. The library, which was completely destroyed in the air raid on Dresden , had to be rebuilt. Janentzky managed to get his dismissed predecessor Hans Hofmann and then Helene Benndorf , his future successor, at his side. On November 30, 1949, he resigned as library director, while he worked as a university lecturer until 1952.

Janentzky died in Dresden in 1968 at the age of 82. He was buried in the Markusfriedhof in the Pieschen district.
