Christian Jouanin
Christian Jouanin (born July 10, 1925 in Paris , France , † November 8, 2014 ) was a French ornithologist and conservationist .
Life
Already at the age of 15, Jouanin devoted himself to professional work with birds when he worked for the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris under the guidance of Jacques Berlioz , who was then head of the bird department . At the age of 22 he married. From this marriage two daughters were born. Jouanin learned the profession of pharmacist, but continued to work for the museum on the side. In 1952, together with Jean Dorst , Berlioz's successor as head of the bird department, he wrote the first scientific description of the juniper francolin ( Francolinus ochropectus ), an endangered bird species from Djibouti , the type specimen of which was sent to the museum by Colonel Eduard Chédeville in the same year. Jouanin also developed a lifelong interest in hummingbirds and petrels . In 1955 he published his first independent species profile on the Jouanin Petrel ( Bulweria fallax ) after he realized this taxon that significantly from the Mascarene Petrel ( Pseudobulweria aterrima different). This description was followed by a long period that Jouanin devoted to researching petrels in the Indian Ocean . While his main goal was to find the nesting grounds of the Mascarene petrel, he discovered another petrel species, the Barau petrel ( Pterodroma baraui ) on the island of Reunion . He also studied the differences between the populations of the Audubon shearwaters ( Puffinus lherminieri ) on Réunion and the Seychelles .
In 1963 Jouanin went on an expedition to the Ilhas Selvagens with Francis Roux . He then conducted studies with Alec Zino on the yellow-billed shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ) on Madeira, a collaboration that culminated in 80 joint scientific articles.
In 1979, together with Jean-Louis Mougin, he wrote the section on tubular noses (Procellariiformes) in the standard work Check-list of Birds of the World by James Lee Peters . From 1970 to 1975 he was Vice President of the IUCN . In 1954 he became a member of the International Ornithological Congress , where he served on the board from 1970 to 1978.
In 2005 Jouanin took part in the French documentary Le Château de Malmaison about Napoleon's residence Malmaison Castle .
