Christian Kauter (born May 6, 1947 in Bern ) is a Swiss manager and former civil servant of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and former general secretary of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). In the 1970s and early 1980s, he won several Olympic and world championship medals as an epee fencer.

After Kauter won silver at the Junior World Championship in 1967, he was allowed to participate in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City . At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , he led the Swiss team for the first time and won silver with Guy Evéquoz, Peter Lötscher and Daniel Giger. Four years later , the bronze medal was added in Montréal (with François Suchanecki, Michel Poffet, Daniel Giger and Jean-Blaise Evéquoz). At these games, Kauter was also allowed to carry the Swiss flag into the stadium at the opening ceremony.

Kauter did not take part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because the Swiss Fencing Association had decided to follow the American call for a boycott . In Switzerland, the decision was left to the individual sports associations; in addition to the fencers, only the riders and riflemen refused to participate. At the fencing world championships , Kauter won a total of five team medals (silver in 1977 , 1981 , 1982 and bronze in 1970 , 1972 ). In addition, he was six times Swiss champion with the foil .

Kauter studied political science at the University of Bern and the University of Geneva . From 1974 he worked for the employers' association of the Swiss printing industry. In 1977 he received the offer to work for the Federal Office for Foreign Trade. Among other things, he was the first embassy secretary in Washington and chief of staff of the Swiss GATT delegation to the Uruguay Round . From 1987 he worked for ten years as General Secretary of the FDP. In 1995 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the National Council .

In 1997 he was employed by the Allgemeine Plakatgesellschaft (APG), an outdoor advertising company, as its deputy general secretary. A little later, Kauter took over management of the company and expanded it into the holding company APG SGA AG . After the company suffered damage of 150 million francs under his leadership due to a failed expansion in Greece, he had to resign.

Since 1976 he has been married to Claudia Giger, the sister of his former teammate Daniel Giger. Two of his three children, sons Michael Kauter and Fabian Kauter , are also sword fencers.
