Ludwig Wucke

Christian Ludwig Wucke (born January 28, 1807 in Salzungen ; † May 1, 1883 there ) was a legend researcher, dialect poet of the Rhöner Platt and painter.

Life

Ludwig Wucke was born on January 28, 1807 as the son of the pharmacist and doctor Dr. Gotthilf Theodor Wucke and his wife Dorothea, b. Brückner, born in Salzungen. At the age of 7 he lost his father, who was infected while treating Napoleonic typhoid soldiers who were retreating from the battle of Leipzig in Salzungen. Even as a child, Ludwig Wucke showed a talent for drawing and painting.

After successfully completing the Meininger Gymnasium, he studied law at the University of Jena from 1826 to 1829 . Here he became a member of the Jena fraternity in 1826 and met the later storyteller and poet Ludwig Bechstein , with whom he became a close friend. After three years of study, he decided against the legal profession; his preferences were in painting and drawing. At this time he created several watercolors with views of the city of Salzung. For financial reasons, however, he was unable to develop this talent at an art academy. In search of work he went to an uncle in Westphalen, who was of no help to him. There he happened to meet recruits who recruited him for service in the Dutch army and he joined the military. In the unit of Duke Bernhard von Weimar, he fought against the Belgians and rose to the rank of corporal. In the camp free time he used his talents as a landscape painter (series of motifs "Dutch watercolors"). The passionate painter began to go blind as a result of an eye infection caused by an infection. At the age of 29, Wucke, now almost blind, returned to his hometown of Salzungen in 1836, where he still hoped for medical help and was looked after by his mother and other relatives. Always dependent on help, he managed to undertake many hikes in the Werra, Rhön and the Thuringian Forest. Here his new passion developed, collecting folk tales, folklore descriptions and dialect poetry. An old college friend of Wucke's, Dr. Friedrich Hofmann published some samples of it in his “Christmas tree”, which encouraged Wucke to continue with this work. In 1864 Wuckes compilation of the "sagas of the central Werra, the adjacent slopes of the Thuringian Forest, the front and the high Rhön and the Franconian Saale" appeared. In 1865 the first edition of his dialect poems appeared under the title "Uiß minner Haimet". In the same year his mother, who had looked after him for almost 30 years, died. In 1873 he received the Schiller Prize and 200 thalers for his more than 800 legends. Wucke was valued as a person and poet in the city and was a welcome guest at celebrations and at the regulars' table, where he entertained the participants with stories and dialect pieces. Ludwig Wucke died on May 1, 1883 of the consequences of a thigh fracture after falling from his armchair. A basalt column, which he had felt in the Rhön, became his tomb according to his wishes.

Afterlife

In honor of Ludwig Wucke, a memorial was erected on April 30, 1911 in the grounds of today's Rathenaupark in Salzung. A street in Bad Salzungen was named after him, and a relief plaque was placed in the house where he was born (today's Café Bein , Markt 4).

Later a school in Salzungen was named after him the Ludwig Wucke School .

Wooden sculptures from the legends of Wuckes and Ludwig Bechstein stand along the Pummpälz hiking trail .
