He interrupted this activity from 1902 to 1907 because he was editor-in-chief in Leipzig for the magazine Deutsche Landwirtschaftliche Tierzucht .

Appreciation

With great knowledge and organizational talent, Mommsen knew how to bundle the individual associations for the important livestock species into state organizations and also to include the associations of the Principality, from 1918 of the Free State of Anhalt in the development. The breeders in today's Saxony-Anhalt area, and especially those in the Altmark, have made great progress with horses (German draft horse), cattle (black and white lowland cattle and Höhenfleckvieh) as well as pigs (German white noble pig and refined country pig) at DLG shows occupy more top places and thus prove the increased level of the region. Mommsen trained a new generation of animal breeding directors such as Ernst Hohnbaum (Erfurt), Leo Abl (Erfurt, Halle), Heinrich Brackelmann (Sangerhausen, Magdeburg) and Hermann Hahn (Naumburg, Halle, Stendal).

Mommsen had an influence on the development of the following important animal breeding associations:

  • Association for the Breeding of Heavy Work Horses in the Province of Saxony (1899–1912).
  • Horse Breeding Association of the Province of Saxony (from 1912)
