Christian Rohrer

Christian Rohrer (born July 14, 1811 in Buchs SG ; † April 24, 1886 there ) was a Swiss politician . From 1851 to 1860 he was a member of the National Council.

biography

The son of a farmer worked as an innkeeper, building contractor and timber dealer after leaving school. In 1840 Rohrer officiated as mayor of Buchs, from 1841 to 1859 as district administrator of the Werdenberg district . In 1843 he suggested the establishment of a secondary school in Buchs. He also worked as a judge at the Werdenberg district court from 1867 to 1869 . During the Sonderbund War of 1847, he served as battalion commander.

Rohrer represented liberal views and was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen in 1840 , of which he was a member until 1858. He ran successfully in the National Council elections in 1851 and then represented the constituency of St. Gallen-South . In the 1850s he approached the conservatives. In 1860 he resigned, from 1861 to 1869 he was again a member of the Grand Council for the Conservatives. Rohrer campaigned for the construction of the railway in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and for a train station in Buchs (opened in 1858). He was also a driving force behind the Feldkirch – Buchs railway line project, which was implemented in 1871 and made Buchs an important border station. In 1872 and 1875 Rohrer was an unsuccessful candidate for the Conservative National Council.
