Christian Steger (born December 31, 1872 in Hintermeilingen ; † May 31, 1940 in Oberhausen ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( center ).

Life

After completing primary school, Steger continued his own studies and also attended economic and social courses. From 1886 he worked in the Rhenish-Westphalian coal mining industry as an underground miner. During this time he was a member of the mine committees and board member of the mine relief fund at the Hibernia colliery in Gelsenkirchen . At the same time he was active in Christian trade unions . It was in 1906 for his union activities exempted and then took over the role as district manager of the Trade Union of Christian miners for the district Rheinland, based in Oberhausen . He also became a member of the union's board of directors. From 1908 he was also the main administrative officer of the main office of the Christian miners' union in Essen . Until his retirement on August 1, 1932, he worked in the trade union movement.

Steger, who had joined the Center Party, was a city ​​councilor in Oberhausen. He was a member of the Prussian state constitutional assembly from 1919 to 1921 and was subsequently elected to the Prussian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1933. From 1928 to 1933 he was one of the parliamentary group leaders of the Center Party in the state parliament. In addition, Steger was a member of the Reich Coal Council and the Reichskalirate as well as a member of the supervisory board of the Prussian Mining and Hütten AG , the mining company Hibernia Herne , the mining AG Recklinghausen and the Deutsche Kalisyndikat GmbH .
