Christian Stegmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Stegmann (* 1965 in Stuttgart ) is a German astroparticle physicist .

Training course

Christian Stegmann began studying physics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in the 1986 winter semester . The Physikalisches Institut is known for its particle accelerator electron stretcher system (ELSA) and organizes the Wolfgang Paul lectures with world-class physicists.

From mid-1991 to mid-1992, Stegmann wrote his diploma thesis at this institute on the subject of the ZEUS uranium calorimeter - testing the read-out electronics and investigations for reconstructing charge and time . He obtained his degree in mid-1992 as a physicist specializing in nuclear physics . From October 1988 to July 1992 he was a scholarship holder of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .

After completing his studies, he did a research stay at CERN in Geneva from October 1992 to July 1995. He completed his stay there with a doctorate in July 1995 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg with a dissertation on the subject of measuring the mean service life of b- Baryons with the OPAL detector at the LEP.

Activity as a physicist

After completing his doctorate, Stegmann initially worked as a fellow at DESY Zeuthen from 1995 to 2000 . At the beginning of his career he was involved in the development, construction and operation of "honeycomb drift chambers" for the HERA-B experiment .

Stegmann then moved to the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB) to the chair of Thomas Lohse and was here from April 2000 to March 2005 senior researcher of the HESS working group.

Then Stegmann went to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . From April 2005 to March 2006, he initially held a substitute professorship for experimental physics . He was then appointed professor for experimental physics and held this professorship from March 2006 to August 2008. He was then appointed professor of physics, which he held from September 2008 to September 2011.

Since October 2011 he has been head of the DESY Zeuthen location . Until the end of 2018, he was also a representative of the DESY directorate in Zeuthen and has been one of the DESY directors since 2019. Parallel to this activity, Stegmann has held a professorship for astroparticle physics at the University of Potsdam since 2011 .
