Christian Stettler

Christian Stettler (* 1966 in Frauenfeld , Canton Thurgau ) is a Swiss Reformed pastor and theologian .

Live and act

Christian Stettler grew up in Stettfurt (TG). After finishing school in Frauenfeld, he studied Protestant theology from 1985 to 1991 at the University of Zurich , the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . This was followed by a year of vicariate in Bischofszell (TG), which he concluded with his ordination. In 1993/94 he received a scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation at the University of Tübingen, where he was Peter Stuhlmacher's assistant until 2000 . With his dissertation The Colossian Hymn. Investigations into the form, the historical background and the statement of Col 1.15-20 he was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. Between 2000 and 2003 he was again a scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the University of Cambridge and then until 2006 senior assistant to Samuel Vollenweider in Zurich. This was followed by pastoral positions from 2007 to 2016 in the reformed parish of Gächlingen (SH) and since 2014 a 70% position in the parish of Flaachtal (ZH), which he shares with his wife.

From 2001 onwards, Stettler worked on his habilitation project and was awarded his title in 2014 at the University of Zurich with his work The Final Judgment at Paulus. Frame semantic and exegetical studies on Pauline eschatology and soterology qualified as a professor. Since then he has been a private lecturer for the New Testament at the University of Zurich as well as a visiting professor and since 2015 adjunct professor for the New Testament and Ancient Judaism at the STH Basel ; since 2017 as a permanent part-time lecturer.

His main research interests are Biblical Theology ; History and theology of early Judaism; Hermeneutics and frame semantics; Jesus and Synoptics (understanding of the law, ethics, christology, soteriology, eschatology); Johannes (relationship with the Synoptics); Paul (Christology, Soteriology, Eschatology, Understanding of the Law, Colossians and Ephesians).

He is a member of the Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical and Theological Research, the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR) and the Working Group for Biblical Renewed Theology .

Christian Stettler is married to the theologian Hanna Stettler . The couple has three sons and lives in Flaach.

Awards

2018: Johann Tobias Beck Prize for his habilitation thesis, in which he shows an overview of the research on Paul's doctrine of the final judgment since 1930, concludes through an analysis of Pauline key texts on a consistent expectation of judgment and his conception of the final judgment with other early Jewish and compares early Christian conceptions. He also takes a critical look at the results of the denominational Pauline exegesis and the New Perspective on Paul .
