Christian Sturm (mathematician)

Christian Sturm (born January 8, 1597 in Gudensberg ; † May 20, 1628 ) was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Marburg from 1621 to 1624 .

Adolescent years

He was born as the son of the then Gudensberg pastor Kaspar Sturm . His father was in 1605 as a Calvinist theology professor at the University of Marburg appointed, and Christian went in Marburg school, the Pädagogium and finally the law school of the University, the latter with financial support from the 1529 by Landgrave Philipp of Hessen founded Hessian Fellows Institute gifted to promote and destitute students. From January 1, 1619 to July 1, 1621 he was one of the stipendiarii maiores (higher scholarship holders) at the scholarship institution.

University professor

On April 24, 1621 he was accepted as professor of mathematics at the University of Marburg and on July 24, 1621 he was introduced .

The religious and territorial political disputes between the Calvinist Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel and his Lutheran cousin Ludwig V von Hessen-Darmstadt soon ended his career as a university lecturer. When Marburg fell to Hessen-Darmstadt in 1624, Sturm, like eight other professors, including his father, was dismissed by Landgrave Ludwig V on March 17, 1624 for religious reasons. He died in 1628 at the age of only 31.
