Christian Torkewitz

Christian Torkewitz (* 1975 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is a German jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and pianist.

Live and act

Christian Torkewitz first studied musicology in Heidelberg . He played in the Blue Note Big Band and in the Rhineland-Palatinate Jazz Orchestra . In 1995 he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship , and he also studied Cuban folklore in Cuba. From 1996 to 2001 he studied saxophone, flute and piano at the Cologne University of Music . In 2009 he completed a master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music . Torkewitz has been teaching at the Open Jazzhaus School in Cologne for several years since 1996 .

Torkewitz pursued his interest in Cuban music with his own band Proyecto típico , and he also led the group New World Ritual . In January 2000 he recorded the Latin jazz album Bicho di Mato with Eli Goulart's Banda di Mato . He was also a member of the Bigband Convention and the Flautomania group (with Michael Heupel , Christian von Kaphengst and Andreas Molino ).

In 1996, together with the saxophonists Alexander Reffgen , François de Ribaupierre , Gerit von Stockhausen and André Cimiotti, he founded the group Volles Rohr , which later became known as Cologne Saxophone Quintet and received the special prize of the 2003 Yamaha Sax Contest. The group recorded several tracks with Bob Mintzer on a US tour in 2003 , which in 2004 on the occasion of Mintzer's European tour in Ludwigsburg for the album Yo! were added.

Prizes and awards

Torkewitz won prizes at Jugend jazz and Jugend musiziert .
