Life

Christian Wilhelm Schultz-Lorentzen was the son of the painter Frederik Otto Lorentzen (1845–1904) and his wife Hedvig Cathrine Schultz (1853–1909). He was born in the then Prussian North Schleswig and attended school in Denmark. From 1891 to 1897 he studied theology at the University of Copenhagen . From 1894 he also studied at the Greenland Seminary in Copenhagen . In 1898 he was sent to Greenland, where he was an ordained helper and teacher at Grønland's seminary in Nuuk . Only a year later he was appointed a missionary of Aasiaat . In 1901 he returned to Nuuk, where he became a missionary and seminary director. In 1905 he became the first pastor of the colony and a year later he was appointed provost of Greenland. In 1910 he gave up the position of head of the seminar. In 1912 he returned to Denmark and was pastor in Vor Frelsers Sogn ( Vor Frelsers Kirke ) in Copenhagen. In 1933 he was also provost of Københavns Søndre Provsti.

Christian Wilhelm Schultz-Lorentzen was extremely linguistically gifted and spoke the Greenlandic language more fluently than almost any other Dane. From 1918 to 1948 he was lecturer in Greenlandic and thus also an advisor to Grønlands Styrelse in church and school matters. He campaigned for more political self-responsibility for the Greenlanders and strengthened the Forstanderskaberne . Under him the seminary received its main building, the first major structure in Greenland. He is primarily responsible for the Greenlandic Church and School Act of 1905, which decisively influenced the educational history of Greenland . In 1920 he was a member of Grønlandsudvalg , from which the administrative reform of Greenland in 1925 emerged. He wrote several works on the Greenlandic language and the culture of the Greenlanders, scientific essays and textbooks for seminary lessons and was also active as a translator of the New Testament and as a psalmist.

He was married to Sophie Nicoline Christensen (1872–1967), daughter of the carpenter Mads Christensen (1834–1879) and his wife Elsine Mogensen (1833–1900), since May 12, 1898. In 1921 he was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order and in 1932 to the Dannebrogsmand . In 1947 he became a commander . Christian Wilhelm Schultz-Lorentzen died in 1951 at the age of 77.
