biography

family

Christian III von Münch was a son of the Augsburg banker Christian II. von Münch and his wife Sabina Barbara, nee. Ploss. On January 24, 1779, he married Johanna Barbara Jakobina von Rauner, the daughter of Johann Christoph von Rauner, member of the Inner Council and assessor of the Augsburg city court, and his wife Maria Jakobina, born in Augsburg. Sulzer. The marriage produced a son and two daughters who survived him.

Banker and entrepreneur

Christian III After the death of his father in 1780, von Münch took over the management of the bank founded by his grandfather Christian I. von Münch . Under his management, the private bank Christian von Münch & Compagnie was no longer one of the most important in southern Germany , as it was in his grandfather's time, but it still remained one of many renowned addresses in Augsburg.

The continental blockade against Great Britain brought heavy losses for the banking houses active in overseas trade , which led to bankruptcy for some . While other Augsburg banks quickly and successfully switched to currency exchange and loan transactions , Münch withdrew entirely from banking in 1808 . The bank was liquidated.

Nobleman

Christian von Muench was on 7 November 1788 by Kaiser . Joseph II into the hereditary baron status and is set to the on March 29, 1790 Reichsritterschaft added. On January 5, 1809, Christian Freiherr von Münch auf Mühringen and Filseck was accepted into the royal Bavarian aristocratic registers.

Landowner

From his father, Münch inherited the castles and estates of Aystetten with the village of Neusäß , Filseck and Hohenmühringen and Niedermühringen with the villages of Wiesenstetten , Dommelsberg , Egelstall and Mühlen , since all other male members of the family had already died when he died. Through marriage, among other things, he acquired further shares in the Hohenmühringen and Niedermühringen dominions, which had only been partially owned by Münch until then , so that they finally came completely into his hands. In 1790 he also acquired the rule of Gündringen .

Even before the private bank was dissolved, he lived mainly at Hohenmühringen Castle. Filseck Castle was only occasionally used as a summer residence. After the liquidation of the bank, Münch concentrated on the administration of his goods.

In 1791, Münch transformed the Hohenmühringen and Niedermühringen rule into a Fideikommiss for his male descendants.

Art lover

Münch had a permanent private orchestra at Hohenmühringen Castle and, from 1806 at the latest, a theater . He welcomed and entertained his guests generously at the concerts and theater performances , so that a lively social life developed on Höhenmühringen . In 1811 the theater was closed by order of King Friedrich I of Württemberg . Although the king himself had taken part in the performances with goodwill, he feared that his officials , who had traveled from far away, could neglect their official duties due to the length of the journey.

Benefactor

In 1806, after the patriciate was abolished, the foundation letter of a foundation founded by several Augsburg families to support needy widows and descendants was renewed and renamed "Foundation of some Augsburg Protestant noble families to support their needy members". Münch was among those who signed the document. In 1810 the foundation's capital was 74,045 guilders.
