She teaches as a professor for material and design in a spatial context in the textile and surface design department at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art , where she has also been Vice-Rector for Networking and Knowledge Transfer since April 2017. She is considered a material specialist.

Life

Christiane Sauer studied architecture from 1988 to 1996 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the Berlin University of the Arts . Afterwards she worked for international architecture firms such as OMA / Rem Koolhaas Rotterdam, FACE Design New York and David Chipperfield Architects Berlin.

In 2001 she founded the Formade office in Berlin - office for architecture and material and in 2009 the Lüling Sauer Architects office together with the architect Claudia Lüling . The focus of her work is on innovative uses of materials, product developments and planning with a focus on materials.

From 2001 to 2008 Christiane Sauer was a research assistant at the Chair of Design and Building Construction at the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin. In 2010/2011 she held the Hans and Roger Strauch Endowed Professorship for Material Sustainability at Cornell University , Ithaca / New York. In 2012 she was visiting professor for industrial design at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle and in 2016 she was visiting professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles, Applied Studies Master Class.

Since 2013 she has been a professor for material and design in a spatial context at the Weißensee Art College in Berlin in the field of textile and surface design.

She is co-founder of the Internet platform Architonic and publishes regularly in specialist magazines and specialist books on current developments in the field of new materials. Since 2012 there has been a collaboration with the architecture portal DETAILresearch on the subject of the future of building .

Under the direction of Christiane Sauer, the prototype of a new shading system was created around 2019 at the Weißenseer Kunsthochschule . It goes back to a design by the design student Bára Finnsdottir, which was produced with the support of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) and is now being tested. A large parasol net made of special light-sensitive metal alloys, attached to a coarse metal grille, reacts to incident sun rays and then unfolds itself.

Memberships

As a member of the experimental materials research research area , Christiane Sauer represents the focus on functional surfaces in an architectural context . She is also a member of the research consortium smart³ - materials-solutions-growth . She is also a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and is an Associated Member of the Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Design at the Humboldt University (HU) in Berlin.
