NN lying mountain lake is located in a water protection area and is fed by springs located immediately to the south that supply Oberstdorf with drinking water. There are also some karst springs at the bottom of the lake . These ensure that the crystal clear Christlessee with drinking water quality never freezes over in winter, as this spring water has a temperature of four to six degrees in summer and winter. The flowing stream joins the Trettach after about 400 meters from the left .

The lake can be reached via the road that is closed to public traffic in the Trettach Valley or via a hiking trail from Oberstdorf via Gruben to Gottenried.

Legend

About 120 years ago an event has been written in an old legends book that can not be dated exactly: glass blowers and their helpers are from the in Venice located archipelago Murano have gone off to look for special materials for its glass art to, and is soon a gaunt little man in strange clothes appeared at the Christlessee. From then on, this little man is said to have fetched a shovel from the nearby house and collected fine mud every year. It dried it and then put it in a handkerchief. When they returned the shovel after the work was done, they usually said, 'Well, now I've got enough to live on for a year.' It is said that the so-called Venetian men looked for cobalt as well as gold . This is used to produce the blue used to color glass. But above all, the Venice men were after manganese ore, which was needed to decolorize the glass or to produce white glass. The Venetians had a monopoly on this coveted type of glass, which was needed for the manufacture of mirrors. Therefore the secret of the discoloration of the glass was secured with the death penalty! - In the Trettach valley people say that the little man found gold mud back then, but the lake apparently kept the cobalt to itself; You can see that glow from the depths of the lake, especially in summer.
