Christoph Anton Balzer (born April 26, 1818 in Altona , † April 28, 1871 in Hamburg ) was a Hamburg merchant and member of parliament.

Life

Balzer only attended elementary school because his parents did not have the funds to finance another school visit. Early on, he began an apprenticeship in a Altona manufactured goods business, where he was further than his apprenticeship clerk operates. Balzer set up his own wool and manufactured goods store in Hamburg in 1845. In the following year he passed the business on to his younger brother and founded the commission , forwarding and agency business with a partner under the company Ziel & Balzer . In 1852 the company was changed to Ziel, Balzer & Co. , because Caesar Bertheau, who had been a silent partner since 1850 , formally entered the company. The same shareholder also had a store in San Francisco under the company goal Bertheau & Co. Following the departure of the remaining target partners continued the business under the name Balzer & Co. continued. After Balzer's death, the company was liquidated in 1871.

Balzer has invested a lot of time in private charitable endeavors. In 1848 he was a co-founder and champion of the free religious community , he was involved in the establishment of the craftsmen's association and in the establishment of the society for the construction of workers' apartments on Steinwärder , one of the first building cooperatives . Most influential was his commitment to founding the Hamburger Volksbank , of which he was elected chairman soon after it was founded in 1861. He held this office until his death. Friends and admirers erected a monument to Balzer in the Hamburger Kunsthalle , a marble bust made by Engelbert Peiffer , which was unveiled in 1873.

From 1849 to 1852, Balzer volunteered as a poor carer. From 1859 to 1862 and from 1865 to 1871 he belonged to the Hamburg citizenship ; he was elected in the general election of the 41st district.
