Christoph Haan SOCist (* 1608 in Buchen (Odenwald) ; †  November 20, 1675 in the Cistercian monastery Schöntal an der Jagst) was a German abbot of the Schöntal monastery.

Life

Christoph Haan was elected abbot of Schöntal Monastery for the first time in 1634 at the age of 28. Since only a part of the monks were present at the election in Wettingen monastery , he was not recognized by his absent brothers. With a new election by the entire convent in 1635, Johannes Leonhard Meinhart was elected abbot. He appointed Christoph Haan as prior . On October 17, 1636 Johannes Leonhard Meinhart died and in the following election on October 28, 1636 Christoph Haan was elected abbot.

Christoph Haan's first years in office were shaped by the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War . The monastery was occupied and plundered several times by the warring parties. The French general Turenne occupied the monastery in 1647 and drove the monks away.

Since Christoph Haan was valued throughout the order, he was appointed administrator of the Eberbach monastery in 1648 , where he worked for three years. During these three years he made Father Michael Schäfer his deputy in Schöntal.

In his last years in office, Christoph Haan enlarged the monastery by buying the manor and the Aschhausen Palace .

Abbot Christoph Haan died in 1675 and was buried in the abbey church, where his tombstone is still preserved today. The inscription reads: Christophori Galli prodest vigilantia valli primaevo flori quam redidit atque decop. Anno 1675, November 20th, obiit reverend'mus D. Christopherus, Abbas 44 tus in Schonthal et postulatus in Erbach. Anno aetatis 68, regiminis 40. Salvum fac dextera tua .
