Hans Ulrich Schwaar

Hans Ulrich Schwaar (born January 31, 1920 in Sumiswald , Canton Bern , † February 3, 2014 in Finland ) was a Swiss teacher , writer , art collector and founder of the Hans Ulrich Schwaar Foundation.

Life

He attended the teachers' seminar Muristalden ( Campus Muristalden ) Bern and studied sports, music, languages ​​and history at the University of Basel , Neuchâtel and Umeå . Further language stays in Bournemouth , Edinburgh and Östersund followed . Schwaar worked as a teacher in Trubschachen, Gohl and Langnau , where - as one of only four people so far - he was made an honorary citizen. At the age of 62, Schwaar gave up teaching and lived most of the time in Swedish and Finnish Lapland .

At the age of 91, Schwaar emigrated to Lapland. After the death of a friend, he returned to the Emmental and lived in the Hogantblick nursing home in Schangnau. At the end of 2013, Schwaar traveled to Lapland again. The documentary "At home in Näkkälä" tells of this last trip. Schwaar died on February 3, 2014 in his second home, Finland. His ashes were scattered in Lapland.

Schwaar became known as the author of vernacular narratives and through translations of various works into Bern German, including those by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz and the Seven Brothers of the Finnish writer Aleksis Kivi . As a friend of the “ primitive peoples ” of the far north, Schwaar researched and described the everyday life, culture and identity problems of the Sami.

Schwaar was also a passionate art collector. In 1984 he founded the Art in the Country Foundation , which was later renamed the Hans Ulrich Schwaar Foundation . The estate of his foundation amounts to over 2500 titles. It includes larger groups of works, including by Swiss artists such as Karl Geiser, Hans Kohler, Eugen Jordi, Emil Zbinden, Emil Jenzer, Edouard Vallet, Hans Berger and Gérard de Palézieux, as well as by Soile Yli-Mäyry and Jussi Jäälinoja from Finland and Alfred Manessier from France.
