Christoph Schütz (born November 6, 1689 in Umstadt ; † January 4, 1750 in Homburg in front of the height ) was a radical pietist and hymn book editor .

Life

After school, Schütz learned the cooper's trade and worked in his parents' vineyards. By turning to radical pietist ideas and running a private convent , he increasingly came into conflict with his pastor. Since Schütz was not ready to recognize the orthodox teachings of the Lutheran official church, but rather stayed away from the service and published radical pietist writings from 1725, the dispute finally escalated.

He then moved to Offenbach am Main in 1729 , where religious separatists were granted freedom of belief. At this time, Schütz was already a recognized personality within radical pietism. Here he also tried to found a Philadelphian society in 1730 . He maintained extensive correspondence, published various radical pietist writings and supported fellow believers. B. several book shipments to Germantown , Pennsylvania.

In 1733 he received the post of chamber clerk at the court of Hesse-Homburg . In addition, he worked on an extensive hymn book project, which he published under the title "Geistlicher Würtz = herbs = and flowers = garden". He originally planned a universal hymn book that should contain 30,000 songs in 30 volumes; In fact, between 1738 and 1744 a compendium in five volumes with five thousand songs was printed in Homburg vor der Höhe. Although the hymnbook has hardly been received at the time, it is now an important hymnological source work that documents both the songs of the church tradition and the chants of separatist groups.
