Christopher Cross is the debut album by the US singer-songwriter Christopher Cross .

history

Christopher Cross was an unknown singer for a cover band in San Antonio in 1979 when he signed a recording deal with Warner Bros. for his own songs. He recorded these songs in the same year and landed at number two on the sales charts with the first single Ride Like the Wind in the USA. The album, which bears his name as a title, reached sixth place in the charts as the highest ranking. The further release Sailing was number one on the charts for a week.

The album is considered one of the most influential of so-called soft rock, which became popular in the early 1980s. Christopher Cross was the only artist to win all four main prizes in the categories of Best Album, Best Singer, Best Song ( Sailing ) and Best Newcomer at the 1981 Grammy Awards ceremony . Only Norah Jones was able to be similarly successful with her debut album, but she did not personally receive the award in the Best Song category because the excellent song Don't Know Why was only interpreted by her, but was written by Jesse Harris . The song Sailing received two other Grammys for the best vocal arrangement and for the single of the year.
