Christopher Hewetson

Christopher Hewetson ( Christophorus Hewtson Hibernus , Christophoro irlandese ) (* around 1739 in Thomastown , County Kilkenny, † 1798 in Rome ) was an Irish sculptor who worked in Rome from 1765.
Life
He was the third son of Christopher Hewetson, Esq., Of Thomastown and Dangan (Kilkenny) and his second wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Hewetson, Esq., Of Cloughsutton, County Carlow . His great, great, great grandfather was Rev. Christopher Hewetson (around 1525), the vicar of Swords .
He attended Kilkenny College and studied in Dublin , probably under John van Nost the Younger . The Provost of Trinity College Richard Baldwin died here in 1758, leaving the university with £ 80,000.
In 1765 he (like the American painter Henry Benbridge ) went to Rome for further training. Here he belonged to the circle around Anton Raphael Mengs and Azara . He was friends with Giovanni Pichler .
For his main work, the nine-foot-high marble tomb of Provost Richard Baldwin for Trinity College, which took nine years of work between 1772 and 1781 and erected in 1784, he received a thousand pounds plus 500 pounds for transport. In 1786 he exhibited the bust (No. 531) of the Scottish painter Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798) at the Royal Academy . In 1788 he also made the Leibniz bust, which was exhibited in August Wilhelm Rehberg's house in 1789 . It then came to the Leibniz Temple , where it was later replaced by a copy. In 1790 he was again an exhibitor at the Royal Academy with his bust No. 520.
He is buried in the Protestant cemetery in Rome .
