Christopher James, 5th Baron Northbourne

Christopher George Walter James, 5th Baron Northbourne ( February 18, 1926 - September 8, 2019 ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Life

He was at Eton College and at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford trained. He was a farmer and director of the Anglo-Indonesia Corporation from 1971 to 1996, and was CEO of Betteshanger Farms Ltd from 1975 .

On the death of his father, Walter James, 4th Baron Northbourne , who had won a silver medal with the eighth in the rowing competitions at the Olympic Summer Games in Antwerp in 1920 , he inherited his title of nobility as 5th Baron Northbourne in 1982 and became a member of the House of Lords .

In the following years, Lord Northbourne took on other functions in the private sector and was Chairman of the Board of Kent Salads Ltd between 1987 and 1992 and director of Chillington Corporation plc from 1986 to 1996 . He was also director of Center Parcs Ltd from 1987 to 1996, and of Center Parcs plc from 1988 to 1996, and regional director of Lloyds Banking Group from 1986 to 1990 .

Lord Northbourne, since 1996 Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Kent and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors was dealt as a member of the upper house, especially with agriculture , education and children's affairs. In the upper house, he belonged to the group of non-party members , the so-called crossbenchers .

With the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost his hereditary right to a seat in the House of Lords. However, he was elected as one of 92 elected representatives of the Erbpeers who remained in the House after the reform.

From his marriage to Aliky Claudel (* 1937), granddaughter of Paul Claudel , he had three sons and a daughter, including his eldest son Charles (* 1960), who inherited him in 2019 as the 6th Baron Northbourne.
